Hello all,
We've had a very positive response so far from the patients, nurses and security guards at the hospital - read notes from the weekend below.
How would Sat Mar 31 at 11:00am work for everyone for a follow-up meeting at PMH?
Thanks,
Julie
On Sat Arta, Giovanni, Annie and Julie met at PMH to work out placement of sky and bubbles. We also talked over production ideas: finding some sort of commercial sign printing solution that would give us the ability to mount laminated, protected images on a stiff, lightweight material (foamcore, gator board, other) that can be mounted, allowing for removal is necessary (velcro/other). Arta is going to take more reference photos of people blowing and catching bubbles for the next meeting.
After Sat's meeting, Julie and Annie closed up. The security guard who closed the room had a very positive response to the project. He thought we should extend the sky further, and thought that having larger, life-sized figures would help to 'keep people company' when the room gets lonely later in the day.
On Sun Denise, Ayako, Laurie, Annie and Julie met to continue working out placement of sky and bubbles. We extended the sky further. We also discussed trying out a few life-sized figures, which could peek around from corners, or tops of doorways in order to fit on the walls (in which case the smaller figures in the 'sky' section would be eliminated). Julie will produce some samples for the next meeting. We did not change the layout of bubbles, as the spacing seemed to work very well. We discussed how many should have drawings in them; the general feeling was to keep the majority as empty bubbles, especially the smaller bubbles. We might plan for fewer than 6 drawings per person, if you assumed that for each wall 'section' (break the room into 10 sections) there are just 3 or 4 bubbles with drawings. We will have to test this out to see how it works.
Julie, Denise and Laurie agreed to each follow up on finding a company that could provide printing services. Julie will post the basic specifications of our project on the blog, so that we can direct companies to it to get an idea of our project.
Annie suggested that we leave the art up until Mon for the nurses, to get their feedback. Julie and Annie went in on Mon; the nurses were very enthusiastic, and we had a patient who was very happy about it - she told us that she noticed it right away, and that it made a real difference. The nurses suggested we leave it up for a few more days so that any of the nurses away on Mon would get a chance to see it.
Does anyone have any more notes to add?
Room dimensions and photos to follow.
We (alumni of the Art & Art History Program, University of Toronto at Mississauga and Sheridan College: Julie Saunders, Ayako Shimizu, Denise Macharacek, Giovanni Senisi, Laurie Kallis, and Artemis Theophylactou) have created a mural/art installation, with Dr. Annie Smith, for the Ambulance Bay Waiting Area at Princess Margaret Hospital.
